How to reach New Delhi Railway Station – 3 ways

New Delhi Railway Station is one of the largest railway station in terms of revenue, number of trains passing through and passenger handling. It is in the middle of a most congested locations in India and yet thanks to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the cleanest railway station in the country.

Location and other info

New Delhi Railway Station has two sides, east and west as per map pointing north. East side is called Ajmeri Gate and West side is called Paharganj. Local autowalas and taxi guys will pose you this first question. Pahraganj houses the tiny budget hotels and restaurants opposite to the entrance. It has limited tiny parking space. The approach road and the general area in front of this part is crowded. Ajmeri Gate is the more spacious side which has the main ticket counters, metro stations, multi level parking and local buses. This side also has both the metro stations situated at walking distance.

Reaching New Delhi Railway Station by bus

Buses upto the outer gates of the railway station on both side. While the connectivity is good, buses give you a first hand taste of Delhi pollution. If you are travelling light and you are confident about bus route, DTC is the best option. If not, avoid taking a bus to the railway station. For all its pros and cons, this option is strongly not recommended.

Reaching by metro

Delhi metro has emerged as the best option to reach anywhere in blazing fast speed. New Delhi Railway Station comes on the Yellow line of Metro. The yellow line covers major areas across the length of Delhi and Gurugram. The other option is the Airport Express route which is faster and the best connectivity between airport to railway station. Terminal One is specially the closest walking distance. Airport Express line offers relative comfortable seats and less crowd. All stations of the Airport Express have baggage check-in facilities for air travellers. There will again be a problem carrying heavy luggage inside the metro trains as most of the times, it is crowded. So if your are travelling with moderate luggage, Delhi Metro is the best option to reach railway station.

Reaching by cab

Radio cabs like Ola and Uber are very convenient in Delhi NCR. Most of the drivers are willing to take the trip to Railway Station. Trip guided by Google Maps will ensure you reach by taking the least congested route. Cab fares are reasonable. They can accommodate all your luggage needs. This option serves best to reach right upto the entrance, pay off your cabbie and then move in without the hassles. Local cabs, the black and green variety are now very sparsely located in Delhi. Most of them are concentrated in places like airport and railway stations only. So they are not usually available in the city. Auto-rickshaws are also available but for short distance only.

Reaching by car

Travelling to Railway Station in a car is by far the best option if you are having luggage and going in group. Reach Connaught Place and then aim for Ajmeri Gate. There you can make use of the ample car parking facilities. There is also a premium parking which comes first. It has high parking charges, but at times, it is worth it. During peak hours, the private cars route will take longer than usual to reach the parking. If it is a drop off, then it might be faster.
